A continuous model for single-item distribution system and inventory allocation problem under transportation cost discounts
ABSTRACT
Transportation creates the value of place in distribution; however the delivery of goods will not take place if an efficient transportation does not exist. Transportation cost accounts for 1/3 to 2/3 of logistics cost, and therefore make it a good candidate for logistics cost reduction. Designing an efficient distribution system is then an important task in practice. Traditional discrete models are popular in academics while dealing with a distribution system, but data and computational requirements increase tremendously as models become more realistic. Without complex data and computational processes, using continuous approximation technique to model the logistic system and analysis the result can provide the decision-maker useful information about system behavior. This research utilized a continuous model to represent an integrated facility location and inventory allocation problem for a single-item distribution system, and considering the effect of transportation quantity discounts in the model. The researcher will analysis the result of the model and provides meaningful insights as a conclusion.
