網際網路雖然帶來了無限商機，但對二十一世紀的企業經營者而言：價格競爭激烈、產品壽命縮短、市場需求瞬息萬變，加上國際化經營，使管理日趨複雜。傳統的管理資訊系統，分屬各部門，例如：人力、財務、生產等均分別作業，彼此資訊不能整合，這種分離式的資訊系統，已難應付快速改變的市場需求。因為，「速度」是企業成功經營很重要的因素。誰能夠快速整合企業體內的資源並產生
服務推向客戶，誰就能站穩腳步迎向成功，在這樣的環境下，舊有的工作處理與資訊傳輸模式勢必被淘汰。因此整合各個部門的資訊系統並加強跨部門工作聯繫的資訊傳輸，就成為企業是否能夠生存下來的重要工作。因此，企業必須結合人力、物力、財力等資源，才能有效地執行策略，並達成目標。且由於先進資訊技術的快速演變，使得過去企業認為無法達成的策略目標變為可能，促使企業與企業間的供應鏈管理與電子商務等新概念因應而生，而這些概念亦發展出相關的應用資訊系統，但要運作這些系統必須有基礎的資料來源－企業資源規劃系統。企業資源規劃系統就是將企業內的生產、行銷、人事、研發，財務及其他相關功能結合在一起的跨部門、跨單位，共同分享整體企業資訊的應用軟體程式。企業可以應用企業資源規劃系統將它們所有分支機構連成全球系統，即時分析產品品
質、規格、客戶滿意度、整體獲利表現程度等。
既然ERP 是因應資訊進步所產生的概念，實務上也有許多公司導入ERP 系統，因此ERP 所帶來的效益，就可以作理論與實務上的印證。傳統對於ERP 的績效評估分有形與無形效益的評估，有形的效益以財務指標為主，較好測量，而無形的效益，則較難測量，因此本研究嘗試以平衡計分卡為分析方法，針對無形與有形效益做分析。
