福爾摩沙峽谷附近被認為是古琉球與馬尼拉海溝間轉形斷層(transform fault)的位置，而過去有關於福爾摩沙峽谷較詳細的資料僅限於走向為N90°東邊的這一段。本研究利用最近在南海最北部區蒐集的磁力及水深資料，搭配舊有的水深及磁力資料，試圖釐清古馬尼拉-琉球隱沒帶間的轉形斷層真相，並探討研究區域的地殼特性。在磁力資料方面，我們將新蒐集的磁力資料修正後得到磁力異常值，再與舊有的磁力資料整編成南海最北部的磁力異常資料。並利用增強解析訊號及增強尤拉解迴旋法分析磁力異常值，以求得磁源可能的位置及深度。磁力資料經過處理、分析後，我們可以確認出數條東西向的條帶，應為南海海洋地殼向北的延伸。且在此區也發現數條南北向的破裂帶。在水深資料方面，先將所蒐集的水深資料與ACT資料作比對，扣掉平均誤差值後，整編這兩筆水深資料，加上舊有的水深資料編整成南海最北部的水深資料。由水深資料我們知道，福爾摩沙峽谷有兩段走向不同的區間，在地形上有很大的差別。在走向為N135°的西邊這一段，峽谷南北兩側落差可達300多公尺，在地形上來看幾乎成一個Z字形，這應該不是一個典型峽谷會呈現的現象，所以我們認為在走向為N135°這一段應該是一個斷崖(escarpment)，是古轉形斷層的遺跡，峽谷應是沿著古轉形斷層，而走向N90°東邊的這一段則可能是大陸與海洋地殼邊界。
