Abstract: The formation of azeotrope of allyl alcohol with water causes difficulty in its recovery from aqueous solution. Owing to inadequate experimental data, the proper process to separate allyl alcohol from water might be difficult to determine. In this paper, the phase behavior of this azeotrope is further studied at atmospheric pressure of 100.23 kPa, and at reduced pressures of 42.25 and 9.60 kPa to determine the feasibility of separation by taking the advantage of pressure effect on vapor-liquid equilibrium. The experimental data collected are examined with Herington consistency test, and are fairly well correlated with Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC models. The experiment results show that the azeotropic composition of this mixture is slightly affected by pressure. The theoretical and experimental approaches give fair understanding of allyl alcohol-water thermodynamic behavior, and conclude that the separation of this mixture by a consecutive two-column azeotropic distillation is not practical and even impossible. Other process such as extrative distillation may be an alternative.
