Abstract: In this paper, the machinability of round KOVAR bar in a lath, using four different cutting tools, i.e. P10, cemented carbide (with TiN coating), pure Al2O3, and AL(2)O(3) (with TIG) is studied. Experimental results on the machinability of these tools, including flank wear, cutting force, surface roughness of the workpiece, diffusion wear between the tool and the workpiece, and the BUE (built up edge) are obtained. The results show that P10 is the best cutting tool, whilst cemented carbide (TiN coating) is the worst cutting tool. By using a P10 cutting tool with high cutting speed (V greater than or equal to 200 m min(-1)), the smallest wear, best roughness, and smallest cutting force can be achieved. In contrast, due to high temperature, high cutting force, and high diffusion condition. the protective TiN-coating in the cemented carbide (with TiN coating) could be destroyed easily, resulting in aggravated fracture, and diffusion wear; making the cemented carbide (with TiN coating) unsuitable for the cutting of KOVAR material. The ceramic tools, on the other hand, are susceptible to micro-chipping, cracking, and welding wear due to separation of the BUE. The chips in the ceramic tools are found to tangle easily with the tools due to their long curing shapes. The performance of the ceramic tools, however, can be improved by alleviating chip problems.
