A study has been made of the branching ratios and emission cross-sections of the N-2(+) first negative system excited by H+, H-2(+), H-3(+), He+, and Ne+. Projectile ion energies from 2 to 10 keV were used. The light-emission cross-sections of 391.4 and 427.8 nm are shown to increase monotonically with projectile ion energy. The differences among the light-emission cross-sections of 427.8 nm induced by the hydrogen atomic and molecular ions are explained. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
