This paper aimed to: (1) analyze its heritage and development in each era, so as to construct the vertical veining; (2) investigate its spreading through space and various forms, so at to expand its horizontal connection; and (3) observe human mind behind the cultural context with insights into the internal meaning of the storyline. Materials gathered from ancient literature, archeology, folklores, verses, dramas, and dances were applied to understand the forming and the basic framework of the story. Further, the development and spreading of the story throughout different ages were examined to elucidate its diversity and abundance of literary meanings. Finally, the charms of the story were expressed through the investigation into the internal significances. With splendors on culture of different eras, the story of Gan-jiang and Mo-xie can be considered as an immortal subject in literal art. The investigation into this story not only explained its development through history but also provided a glimpse at human’s fetish-worship toward sword and the cultural psychology of revenge. This was the value of the research.
