We propose an investigation to examine the relationship between stress orientations of intermediate-depth earthquakes and the Wadati-Benioff zone in the Hellenic arc, where the African plate subducts underneath the Eurasian plate on the east Mediterranean Sea and the earthquakes extend as deep as 180 km. Reasons for the proposal are three-fold. (1) The strong curvature of the Hellenic arc on surface makes it a likely candidate for the category where the half dip angle is far greater than the radius of curvature. Other subduction zones in the category tend to exhibit lateral extension as the 「ping-pong」model predicted. It is thus interesting to probe the pattern of slab stress in the Hellenic arc. (2) A significant amount of data, including earthquake locations and moment tensor solutions both from local seismic network and teleseismic studies, have accumulated for the past few years. The amount of data available to us now makes the investigation feasible. (3) For strong curvature trenches, we have developed cylindrical projection to neatly determine the dip angle of the subducting slab while account for the continuing change of strike. We also applied slab coordinates projection to examine the stress orientations of intermediate-depth earthquakes relative to the in situ slab geometry. Schemes for both analyses are readily available for us because we have done similar analysis on a global scale. Results of this investigation are essential for testing current models explaining origin of slab stresses and are also complementary to our previous global survey. The project will be largely in cooperation with Dr. Kostas Konstantinou. He is a Greek seismologist who will be teaching at National Central University.
