In 2009, we have successfully developed a 150 W stack using metal foams instead of traditional graphite flow fields. The cost is low, yet it's easy to fabricate and assemble. The stack is light and compact. Good performance can be obtained when using oxygen as the oxidant. However, the performance degrades when using air as the oxidant. Preliminary investigation into this problem reveals that the reactant distribution is not as good as it can be. Because we were focused on the feasibility of using metal foams in previous years, we did not pay attention to the flow distribution. In practical applications, air, instead of oxygen is used. Therefore, we are proposing a two-year project to look into this problem and build a 600 W stack using air. The main focus of the first year of this two year proposal is to set up a 3-D model to simulate the transport phenomena of a metal foam fuel cell and to investigate the effects of important parameters, such as pore size, permeability, and thickness, on the water transport and fuel cell performance. The CFD software, Fluent, will be used in this study. Special physical models will be incorporated using user defined subroutines. In the second year, results obtained from the single cell study will be used to build a 600 W fuel cell stack. The fuel and oxidant distribution among the various single cells will be studied. The goal is to build a working 600 W fuel cell stack using 10 cm × 10 cm MEAs. Effects of cooling system design, that is, natural convection and forced convection, on the stack performance will also be investigated.
