Winter heavy rainfall events struct northeastern Taiwan and caused mudslides in numerous villages in late November 2007 and late October 2010. The scale of damage resulted from winter rainfall is even more severe than that from rainstorms. Few studies in the literature have paid attention to the hydrological cycle of East Asian monsoon during the winter season, and the knowledge of the hydrological process involved in Taiwan trough and Taiwan low is limited. The past two field experiments (Air Mass Transformation Experiment and Winter Monsoon Experiment; AMTEX and WMONEX) were designed without concerning the weather systems in the vicinity of Taiwan. It is revealed from our pilot studies that Taiwan lows are very different from midlatitude fronts regarding to their dynamical and hydrological structures. Therefore, a new perspective of the hydrological cycle and structure of Taiwan lows should be established. The proposed research will investigate the hydrological process of Taiwan lows, the regional hydrological cycle in East Asia, and the role of Taiwan lows in this aspect. This is the third year proposal of the three-year project.
