In this project, we construct ground-based HF (high frequency) CW (continue wave) Doppler sounding system, GPS receiver, and magnetometer networks to monitor variations of the ionospheric Doppler frequency shift (DSF), total electron content (TEC), and geomagnetic field associated with earthquakes in Taiwan. The ionospheric DSF and TEC are sensitive to the earthquake preparation which can be used to detect the temporal precursor, and find possible occurrence time of a forthcoming earthquake. On the other hand, the geomagnetic field is susceptible to local/nearby underground conductivity and current changes and therefore it can be employed to search possible location of the forthcoming earthquake. The simultaneous seismo-electromagnetic, the ionospheric DSF, and TEC as well as the geomagnetic field, monitoring should allow scientists to have a better understanding on the lithosphere-ionosphere coupling as well as reduce the faults alarm and increase success rate of the earthquake precursor. Meanwhile, recent researches show that prominent earthquake precursors in the ionospheric DFS/TEC and geomagnetic field simultaneously appear over both large earthquakes and their conjugate points. To further confirm the earthquake precursor being observed, this project shall via an international cooperation develop a seismo-electromagnetic conjugate monitoring in Taiwan and Indonesia.
