出版不僅是商業活動，同時也肩負了文化傳承的功能。鑑於相關論述的缺乏，本文以爾雅出版社之出版品、作家群為觀察指標，從文學社會學與文學史雙面向，對於隱地及其出版事業，在臺灣出版史及文學史上的意義及貢獻，進行探究。 本文認為與同為「五小」的純文學及九歌出版社相較，爾雅出版社在整體形貌與精神氣度上，更類同於「純文學」，這樣的類同性，也呈顯在作家結構的組成形態上。爾雅出版社作為一個風雲際會的文學場，為文壇培育作家無數，1980年代女性作家大量崛起的景象，對應爾雅出版社作家結構的變化，有清楚的相應顯現。 爾雅出版社持續深探極短篇藝術美學，在副刊與網路媒介之間，扮演了催化、轉銜的重要角色。民國動亂史的記憶書寫，記影留史的各文類叢書，出版品在同業之中更顯出「歷史味」的濃厚。爾雅出版社擁有豐富的別集與選集，與臺灣文學史之間，形成連繫脈動，其中不乏出版人慧眼獨具的文學眼光，「年度文學選集」的出版，在文學史上具有開創性的意義，《現代女詩人選集》一書，對於臺灣文學檢視、建構女性詩人創作成果的認定上，則具有重要的指標參照價值。 自1995年起，爾雅出版社「一書」作家變多的現象，可視為與臺灣文學出版生態之間，關連互動的旁證。「爾雅」品牌光環所代表的象徵資本，形同文學好書，等同出版人隱地的認定鑑賞，對於海內外的新人，仍然極具吸引力。Not merely for its commercial-oriented mission and goals, publishing industry also carries the significant cultural transmission functions in the mean time.
