; In this 3-year project we plan to integrate observations from the FORMOSAT-3 satellites, commercial aircrafts operated by China Airlines and EVA Air, and commercial container ships operated by Evergreen Marine Group to build a three-dimensional distribution of greenhouse gases over the Pacific. Two types of aircrafts will be employed in the measurements. For the Airbus aircrafts, both A340-300 from China Airlines and A330-400 from EVA Air are considered for this work. For the Boeing aircrafts, both Boeing 747-400s and 777-200s are considered for carrying the instruments. We collaborate with the European IAGOS project for the IAGOS instruments to be installed on A340-300 and A330-400. For the Boeing aircrafts, we will use the Japanese CME instrument that has been certified to fly on B747-400s and B777-200s, respectively. The phase I of this project will run from 2008 to 2010. The first IAGOS Pacific fly is scheduled to launch in summer 2009 using the A340-300 from the China Airlines. The first IAGOS instrument to fly on-board A330-400 is scheduled to launch in summer 2010 from the EVA Air. The first CME instrument on-board a Boeing aircraft is scheduled to launch into action in late 2008 or early 2009. The container ship measurement is scheduled to launch into action in late 2008 or early 2009. The budget for the first year will be used to pay for the instrument cost for CME. The budget for the second year will be used to pay for the fuel cost in carrying an estimated weight of 120 kg of the IAGOS packages I and II on-board an A340-300 aircraft for one year. The budget for the third year is similar to the second year but to pay for the fuel cost of an A330-400 aircraft carrying IAGOS packages I and II for one year. After one year’s successful operation for each aircraft, funding will be searched from other sources to support their continue missions. For example, Taiwan EPA and Ministry of Foreign Affairs have already expressed their strong support to partially cover the cost of the operation. The instruments in aircrafts and container ships are expected to operate for more than 10 years. In doing so, we will be able to produce a three-dimensional greenhouse measurements over the Pacific region. These data will be very important for estimating the total emissions of greenhouse emissions in the Pacific regions. These data will also represent one of the key contributions from Taiwan to the international community in the context of global warming and climate change.
