Abstract: 研究期間:10108~10207;The submarine canyons and Manila trench offshore SW Taiwan are major sediment conduits and sinks for terrestrial sediments derived from the tectonic active Taiwan mountain belt and the stable south China terrain. A study on sediments contained in the canyon-and-trench system would yield information on how various processes (e.g., hyperpycnal flows versus landslide-triggered turbidity currents) transport coarse materials into abyssal South China Sea and their corresponding products. The recurrence intervals (or frequency) for major submarine landslides (caused, perhaps, by large earthquakes) and major onshore flood events may also be recognized. Controls on canyon-and-trench deposition such as source area lithology, eustatic sea level changes, climates, seismic intensity, and physical oceanographic processes are also likely to be discerned through sediment analyses. This project seeks to core and study sediments retrieved from the canyons of Gaoping, Penghu and Formosa and the Manila trench as well as slope basins offshore SW Taiwan within a few project years. Depositional age for cored sediments should span, at least, for a few tens of thousands of years before present therefore the deep coring service provided by R/V Ocean Researcher 5 (OR5) is anticipated. For the first project year, the following working items are planned. (1) Long piston coring by using OR5 in the lower reach of the Gaoping Canyon (deeper than around 3000 m isobath) and the isolated slope basins free from terrestrial sediment inputs and located around the seismogenic megasplay fault. (2) Sediment analyses on cores collected by using OR5. Major items of analyses include grain size, mineral and chemical composition, sedimentary structure, stable carbon, nitrogen and oxygen isotope along with radio-carbon dating on foraminifers. (3) Sediment analyses on core MD178-10-3291 (38 m long, 2070 m water depth) locating at the middle reach and west bank of the Gaoping Canyon. Similar approaches for sediment analyses as carried out on OR5 cores will be employed on the MD cores. The MD3291 core is one of the 17 giant piston cores retrieved by using French R/V Marion Dufresne during 2010 and contracted by Central Geological Survey for the purpose of exploring gas hydrate potentials in the study area. Use of this core has been permitted by Central Geological Survey. (4) Correlating and comparing results from sediment analyses for OR5 and MD cores. Objectives for the first project year are: (1) to understand the characteristic features for hyperpycnites and distribution of hyperpycnites in the lower reach of the Gaoping canyon; (2) to understand the characteristic features for turbidites deposited by landslide-triggered turbidity currents by studying cores retrieved from isolated slope basins; (3) to deduce possible recurrence intervals of major submarine landslides and major onshore flooding events; (4) to understand the mechanisms on how coarse materials are funneled down to the Mainla trench through the Gaoping canyon.
