;This project studies Chinese “nan-se” as a different conceptual system and "identity" from the western homosexual. Homosexuality has been described as a historical emergence from an European modern context; it is arguable that Chinese “nan-se” likewise emerged in a Chinese "early modern" context. Nonetheless, a close reading of “nan-se” novels may reveal that a discursive and "knowledge" construction (in the form of mythical stories) of the collective self-awareness of “nan-se” was already in place in late Ming dynasty. This project will explore the implications of this thesis for gender/sexuality studies and politics.
