;The urban essay is originated from the Taiwanese local essay written in an urban way. The advocators of female urban essay include Zheng Mingli, Huang Fan, Lin Yaode, and so on. However, along with the fallen of Lin Yaode, none of the critics devoted to arranging the development of the urban essay. Therefore, this paper will focus on the observation of “urban essay” and hopes for a better understanding and realization of this literary genre.
The pioneers of the female urban essay are Hsieh Shuangtian, Qiu Xiuzhi, and Li Ang; thereafter, Jien Zhen, Chu Tianhsin, and Ke Yufen take it over. Nevertheless, since the twentieth century, there have been few female urban essay writers with distinctive urban styles. Most of the 1970s’ female essay writers write about two major themes, gender issues and physical relationships. Instead, Zhang Huijing, Yang Chiahsien, and Huang Lichyun give us a new look by concentrating on the affection and emotion of people who live in the urban jungle.
As the common written field of the three female writers are located in Taipei City, this paper will set the scope at the twelve administrative districts of Taipei City, matching with its geographical, historical, and cultural backgrounds, not only having a cross-reference between them but also expecting to view a more comprehensive “literature in Taipei”.
Overall, through the essay of three female writers, Zhang Huijing, Yang Chiahsien, and Huang Lichyun, this paper will observe the changes and developments of Taipei City in modern times and in-depth research into urban essay, not only open up a new field on this topic but hope for contributing to the studies of female urban essay across the century.
