;This study originates from the author’s doubt about why there are few data of old Japanese films and contrarily much more Chinese information of contemporary old western films in Taiwanese websites. During the research, the author gradually explored how the Japanese film management system that used to exist in Taiwan affects the locals’ view toward Japanese films. Japanese films were widely popular in early post-war Taiwan which was deeply Japanized. However, the quantity and category of imported Japanese films were restricted under special governmental control, and therefore only those which excluded sensual, political-military and antisocial content could be introduced into Taiwan. In 1972, Japanese films were completely prohibited in Taiwan after the Republic of China broke off diplomatic relations with Japan, and this had left a generation of Taiwanese a blank page in the history of Japanese film development in Taiwan. After Japanese films were allowed to be imported conditionally in 1980s, only great films could attract Taiwanese audience because their preferences for Japanese films had diminished due to long-term estrangement. Such trend also reflects the development driven by the policies of uprooting Japanese culture and implanting Chinese culture in post-war Taiwan.
