Because of the inundation of various learning resources, students need to choose and browse in a large amount of information. Thus, there has to be a mechanism to guide and support students in knowledge construction and comprehension. Concept map is one of such mechanisms in widespread use. Concept map based tools allow students to classify and organize the concepts scattered in their learning resource, which help a lot in learning. However, most students are used to read on paper textbooks, yet the supporting digital information lives in computing devices. In such way, students need to switch their focus between computer and textbooks during learning process, which causes some degree of disturbance. In perceiving this, we propose a concept map based learning supporting system with pen-gesture operations. Using this system, students can read and construct the concept map simultaneously; moreover, the system will provide scaffolding for novice students, so that they can have a well-structured view when they go through unfamiliar topics. By gradually constructing concept maps on their own, students consolidate their comprehension and improve their recall, making studies more effective. In addition, students learn further in every single concept with the supplementary readings collected in each concept unit. We held a comparative experiment to evaluate the user-friendliness and learning effect of this system. The result tells us that there is a significant improvement in the recall of conceptual propositions, and students feel satisfied with the operating mechanism of our system according to the satisfaction questionnaire.
