Asphalt mix production has been limited to conserve resources and reduce pollution. Hot mix

asphalt (HMA) technologies consume a significant amount of energy during asphalt mix

production. However, warm-mix asphalt (WMA) might decrease the conserved energy by

lowering the mixing and compaction temperature. There has long been a lot of interest in the

incorporation of waxes as the rheological enhancer in binders of asphalt. Sasobit (S) and

Polyethylene (PE) waxes reduce viscosity-temperature and improve workability. In this study,

S and PE from a Taiwan company were used with varying percentages of 1% - 5% by mass of

binder. While mechanical blending at two different speeds: 1000 rpm and 2000 rpm was utilized

to see the effect of the blending method based on the binder′s rheological characteristics. In

order to identify the optimal percentage of wax additives for warm mix binders, rheological and

chemical tests were carried out. The test includes the following parameters: penetration,

ductility, softening point, viscosity, dynamic-shear rheometer (DSR), rutting, fatigue, and thinlayer

chromatography/flame

ionization

detection

(TLC-FID)

for

chemical

detection.

According

to

rheological testing, adding more wax additives could improve the stiffness of the binder

while lowering its viscosity at high temperatures. Mixing at 2000 rpm having a greater decrease

compared to 1000 rpm which has a significant benefit in lowering production and mixing

temperatures. Based on all the rheological performance in study research, the performance of

PE-G is comparable to S. The use of 3% wax additives is the ideal amount to utilize in Taiwan′s

warm mix binder. It is able to fulfill Taiwan′s construction criteria for pavements in hot

temperatures (PG70). However, it is recommended to conduct asphalt concrete samples using

several wax additives for better performance interpretation.
