Whose village and whose story? – A Study of the origin and limitation of the preservation of Military housing commune in Taiwan This project is to study the origin and limitation of the preservation of military housing commune in Taiwan, hoping to improve our theoretical understanding of the politics of difference and multiculturalism. Field study will be carried out in Shan-Chuan 1st Village in Taipei County. It is our observation that the key of preserving military housing commune in Taiwan lies not only in the selection of village location, administrative management etc., but also in the orientation of preserving a military housing commune. What is at stake is to come out a village for us, for them or for everyone? It is our concern that the preservation will produce a mosquito exhibition center or a library for recording life experience. Will it be an industry featuring nostalgic product or a platform for dialogue and communication? What do village residents, neighborhood residents, cultural entrepreneurs, non-government organization, public civilians have in common regarding the preservation of military housing commune in Taiwan? It is hoped that a clarification of the above-mentioned questions can provide a sufficient understanding of the particularity of ethnic relations in Taiwan and help to build up a multicultural society with the basis of social justice.
