女性在客家研究中一直是一塊不可或缺的領域，只是學界始終缺乏系統性、女性觀點甚至是比較觀點的研究。經由比較研究提出一些和其他族群不同的看法，才更能正當化「客家婦女」的研究。而延續著比較研究的脈絡，同時處於「國家」、「族群」和「性別」三個領域交叉碰撞的東南亞客家婦女議題的研究，對於台灣客家婦女研究的充實更有其重要性。目前就有限的資料裡，僅能大致勾勒東南亞女性的現象，至於東南亞客家女性研究的資料則相當零散，本研究擬作為探索性的東南亞客家婦女研究，嘗試運用文獻蒐集、口述資料整理，以及深度訪談等方式，蒐集整理更多東南亞客家婦女資料，以作為後續東南亞客家婦女與台灣客家婦女的比較研究，從而豐富台灣客家婦女研究的內涵。Hakka women in hakka study has always been an essential area, but academia has always been the lack of systematic, female point of view of even a comparative perspective for this area.
