The next-generation mobile communication networks are designed to accommodate high data rate and high mobility. The next-generation mobile communication networks support the services for varieties of application and huge number of users. The mobile data usage and traffic are expected to increase exponentially in next five years. The scarce spectrum and fragment bandwidth lead the demand for radio resources to often exceed the available bandwidth. Therefore, dynamic spectrum sharing and flexible resource management are very important. Because the possibility for WiMAX/LTE/LTE-Advanced co-existence, these heterogeneous networks also support different tire cells, such as macro, micro and femto cells. Therefore, to establish and maintain good resource management and spectrum sharing are crucial issues. In this project, we will investigate mechanisms for handling flexible spectrum and resource requirements in the next-generation mobile communication networks. The main purpose of this subproject is to design the resource management and spectrum sharing mechanisms. The resource allocation and spectrum aggregation procedures are also considered. The cognitive-radio mechanisms can be used in the next-generation mobile communication networks. Consequently, spectrum aware spectrum sharing and flexible spectrum use are built to construct the cognitive resource management model. The research topics also include: intra-cell and inter-cell spectrum sharing, environmental awareness spectrum handover, etiquette protocol and cross layer design for resource allocation and spectrum aggregation. We also adopt the carrier aggregation concepts to build a resource management system with Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA), Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) and Dynamic Spectrum Multi-channel Operation (DSM). Accordingly, the spectrum utilization, fairness and throughput can be maximized. Finally, we will consider the Layer-encoded Multimedia Server Design, Opportunistic Multicast Scheduling and Resource Allocation, Machine to Machine communication.
