Through analyzing the composition of the paintings, I try to understand how the painter presented the exhibited objects and the exhibition spaces in Kaichō, and how he depicted the audience involved in the exhibitions. What’s more, by analyzing the historical significance of some important objects in the exhibitions, I try to show various aspects of value in the Kaichō events in the Edo period.
Chapter one discusses what Kaichō is, and provides a brief overview of the history of Sennyu-ji and Seiryō-ji. Chapter two focuses on analyzing Enkōan’s paintings, and also discusses how different the exhibition spaces are between Kaichō in the Edo period and the museum galleries nowadays. Chapter three looks at art-historical researches and discusses some objects especially significance in Enkōan’s paintings.
