;Global warming is a stark reality that global citizens must confront today. With extreme weather events occurring worldwide, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) pointed out in its latest sixth assessment report, "Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability," that global warming will rise 1.5 degrees Celsius within the next 20 years, exacerbating various climate hazards such as extreme weather disasters, heatwaves, and biodiversity loss, all of which are inescapable globally.
As Taiwan is an agriculturally-based nation traditionally, the question of how to help farmers confront the immense challenges of extreme weather and adjust their supplies has become an essential issue in modern agriculture. The research case for this study is the Taiwan Homemakers United Consumers Co-op, an organization that participated early in promoting friendly and organic farming. Unlike typical retail channels with the primary goal of profit, the Cooperative is driven by a long-term objective and policy based on the wellbeing of the land, producers, and consumers. The hope is that this economic model can socially drive environmental improvement and, through education, consolidate consumer consensus, ensuring both the land and the producers can confidently produce environmentally sustainable products.
In 2022, fresh vegetables accounted for 13.4% of the case company′s total sales, with cabbage constituting approximately 9.3% of the total revenue from fresh fruits and vegetables. Since the cabbage market lacks an upfront total quantity control mechanism, it often experiences drastic price fluctuations, making it an appropriate subject to investigate the case′s total quantity control mechanism and the income comparison of the fixed-price procurement system. This research adopts a case study approach, using secondary literature and five years of case-provided data to compare prices and transaction volumes. It examines farmer incomes and quantities through interviews with case employees, investigating the factors that determine each farmer′s supply volume. Furthermore, it explores the operation process and management of production and sales adjustment by analyzing the relationship between the number of case cooperative members and the total procurement volume. |
