Firstly, in the 1850s, Wang Tao entered Shanghai where he was employed by London Missionary Society, marking the beginning of his own expansion of horizons. By examining the western knowledge and culture introduced in the London Missionary Society′s publications such as Chinese Serial and Shanghae Serial, as well as translations collaborated with missionaries during this period, and works ghostwritten for friends, the paper explores the knowledge and discourse Wang Tao acquired from his initial contact with the West. Secondly, attention is paid to Wang Tao′s years in Hong Kong after 1862, followed by an overview of his European travels starting in 1867, and his achievements in culture and publishing upon his return to Hong Kong in 1870, clarifying the influence brought by Wang Tao′s European travels. Lastly, the focus is on Wang Tao′s work Manyou Suilu, analyzing the intertextuality and dialogical space preserved in the inaugural edition of Dianshizhai Pictorial through inserted images and literary supplements, and further clarifying the innovative ideas and visions, as well as the worldview and modernization perspective constructed in Wang Tao′s European travel works, re-evaluating the significance of Wang Tao′s travel and works in the cultural history of modern times.
