dc.description.abstract | Isaac William Wiley was the missionary who came to China, just after they were allowed to do missionary work in China. His record about China society could have a chance to affect other missionaries who were interesting to come to China. Since Wiley’s record and himself haven’t been studying much, so this paper will use his record as the main resource, focus on what he saw and his opinion about Fujian women. However, Wiley only stay in China less than a decade, his record might have some misunderstanding and omissions, but his book still reveals his concern about Fujian women and some of his unique opinion.
Wiley believes Fujian society and the families didn’t treat their women equally. Also, according to different ages and environment, women could have a different reaction to the inequality. Therefore, this paper will talk about the treatment of women, expectation from families, in all infancy, adolescence and after marriage. Besides, families from different social class will have the distinct demand to women, and this also means the way how the family gets to benefit from women are quite different. All the phenomenon shows the restriction to Fujian women and they were also considered as merchant or tool.
The way Wiley cared about Fujian women was not just what he saw from the outside, but also the feeling inside the heart. Compare to other missionaries, this was the particularity about Wiley and his record. | en_US |
