zh_TW
Gustave Flaubert’s The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaler is the second of the three stories published in 1877 under the title of Three Tales. The story of Saint Julian to which Flaubert refers can be found on the stained-glass-window in the church of Rouen. In Flaubert’s version of the story, the hunts in the story are awesomely horrifying. Saint Julian massacres every animal he encounters in the forest. His violence and bloodlust and the murder of his parents cannot be separated. The purpose of this paper is to explore the hunt in Flaubert’s tale through different perspectives. This study is divided into four chapters: the first chapter provides a discussion on objective, place and season of hunters hunting in the Middle Ages. Trough analyzing hunting scenes in Flaubert’s tale, we try to distinguish the differences between hunting presented in the story and hunting in the Middle Ages. The second chapter attempts to analyze the development of medieval hunters and their related equipment, we will study how they use knowledge and skills to hunt wild animals. The third chapter explores the various animals killed and their symbolic meaning. Lastly, in the fourth chapter, we would like to discuss the scenes of hunting and the impact of hunt on the psychological life of Julian. He kills his own parents. Like Oedipus, Julian comments the ritual parricide which had been predicted. We will therefore pinpoint the relation between Saint Julian’s hunting and his parricide. Through the study, we will be able to understand the desire of hunting of Julian is directly related to his Oedipus complex.en_US
