dc.description.abstract | The main resource of this thesis is ‘Hu Pinching, the bibliographic database of the books translated from French in Taiwan’, founded by French Bureau in Taipei. We will analyze the French ‘novel’ from the bibliographic data published from 1948 to 2017 in Taiwan.
This research is structured chronologically. We focus on the year of 1987, when is the declaration of the end of the martial law in Taiwan, and the year of 2006, when the number of the publication of the novel translated from French was decreasing, as the benchmark. We divide the period of 1948 to 2017 into three parts: 1948 to 1987(from the arrival of the government of KuoMingTang to the end of the martial law), 1988 to 2006 (the increase of the publication of the novels translated from French), and 2007 to 2017(the decrease of the publication of the novel translated from French). In the last chapter, the adversity of the publication of novel translated from French will be analyzed from two different points of view: the publishers’ and the translators’. We will then try to predict the future of the publication of the novel translated from French in Taiwan.
Through this research, we will know that there was a great number of counterfeit translations in the market of foreign languages in the first time period (1948-1987) and that the publisher Zhi Wen(志文) has published the majority of the novels translated from French. Besides, there was a great change in the publication and the amount in this time: 1948-1987 is when the publication of the classic novel translated from French increased; 1971-1987 is when the publication of the contemporary novel translated from French raised.
In the second time period (1988-2006), we found that the publisher began to have certain strategies to publish the novel translated from French. The strategies include ‘the form of mother and son’, ‘the form united’, ‘the distinctive publication’ and ‘the publication of series’. Apart from the open policy of the government, the change of the way of the book-selling and the development of the French market in Taiwan, the main reason for the increase of the publication of the novel translated from French is the advent of the literary agent.
In the last time period (2007-2017), although the number of the publication of the novel translated from French had decreased, the business model of the publishers became focused. The publishers focused on the works of the French best-selling novelists. For the publishers, the reasons for the decrease of the publication of the novel translated from French include the downturn of the book market, the replacement of reading with the cellular data, and the uncertainty of the ‘HuPinching, the subsidy program for publication’. For the translators, the cause of this decrease was the wage stagnation that led to a large number of part-time translators, which directly influenced the development of the industry of translation in Taiwan.
