zh_TW
Japan: Its Architecture, Art, and Art Manufactures was published in 1882. It records British industrial designer Christopher Dresser′s (1834-1904) traveling experience in Japan in 1876 and his own views on Japanese design. This book is generally regarded as one of the earliest works seriously studying Japanese art manufacture and architecture by Westerners. However, few researches on this book have been carried out. By analyzing the illustrations in Japan: Its Architecture, Art, and Art Manufactures, this thesis attempts to demonstrate the distinct values of the book′s plates among the contemporary travelogues. In addition, through exploring the relation between the texts and images, I show how Japanese Illustrated Books subconsciously influence European travelers in the late 19th century. There are four chapters in this thesis. Chapter one outlines the career of Christopher Dresser and the background of his travel in 1876. Chapter two introduces Japan: Its Architecture, Art, and Art Manufactures, and classifies the plates in the whole book. It also compares the differences among various travelogues. Chapter three focuses on the plates classified as the catalogues of “Architecture” and “Art Manufacture.” Chapter four addresses the plates which were from Japanese Illustrated Books. I investigate the sources of these images as well as discuss the text-image relations. Through analyzing the texts and images, this thesis endeavors to reveal the interaction between Japanese Illustrated Books’ visual inspiration and the personal experience of the travelers.en_US
