(Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge)在英國倫敦出版的插圖週報。該雜誌於1843至1845年刊登藝術史學家詹森(Anna Brownell Jameson, 1794-1860)撰寫的專欄〈論傑出畫家們的一生〉(“Essays on the Lives of Remarkable Painters”),介紹25位義大利文藝復興時期的藝術家。 zh_TW
The Penny Magazine was a weekly illustrated publication published in London by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge from 1832 to 1845. From 1843 to 1845, it featured a column titled “Essays on the Lives of Remarkable Painters,” written by art historian Anna Brownell Jameson (1794-1860), which introduced 25 Italian Renaissance artists. This thesis focuses on the beginning of Jameson’s column——specifically the sections on Cimabue (c. 1240-1302) and Giotto (c. 1267-1337) to explore why and how the British public in the mid-19th century should be familiar with early Italian Renaissance painters and their works. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter examines Jameson’s perspectives on Cimabue and Giotto as described in her “Essays on the Lives of Remarkable Painters,” and the literature she referred to. It also compares her thoughts to other early 19th century British art writings. The second chapter delves into how Jameson’s academic background and writing strategies shaped her viewpoints on Cimabue and Giotto. The third chapter centres around Charles Knight (1791-1873), the editor of The Penny Magazine, and Jameson’s aims and methods of mass education. It also analyses the purposes, methods, and effectiveness of introducing Cimabue and Giotto to the mid-19th century British public through The Penny Magazine.en_US
