dc.description.abstract | As one of the contemporary female writers in Taiwan, six novels were published by Aiya from 1983 to 1997 as followed, “I Am Also Lonely,” My Responsible Love,“ ”Once Upon A Time,” ”Aiya’s Short Selections,” ”The Escaped Woman ,” and ”Aiya’s Short Selections II.” In 1985, she created and published “Once Upon A Time” based on her own childhood experiences, which is the most popular and highly influential to the literary arena. It was adapted by Public Television Service Foundation (PTS) to a TV serial of 20 episodes in 1999; moreover, it was awarded with the Golden Bell Awards’ Best Television Series in drama in the same year. The TV production of “Once Upon A Time” set the trend of re-reading old books, which reaches its peak in 2004 when the novel itself was selected to be “the 100 favorite novels” by a online poll conducted collaborating by Eslite Bookstore, Linking Books, United Daily News literary page and PTS. This also firmly establishes Aiya’s position in the writer’s field in Taiwan.
Aiya’s novels exquisitely portray people’s inner world from every walk of life. With a gentle and susceptible touch to have an insight into humanities, she thoroughly interprets stories around us. Most of her works are inspired by ordinary daily lives and words come alive when she depicts in short selections, short-story and novels. In addition, Aiya hits the nail on the head about affections and compassion of mankind with a clear view in her out-of-the-way creations. The research begins with chapter one which includes research motivation, research method and ambit to define the outline and framework. Chapter two talks about Aiya’s life and her works, which begins with her life story and family background and carries on with her creation history and contributions to the literary arena. This is followed by three chapters such as short-story, short selections and novels which respectively outlines her writing motivation and topic analysis. Besides, each chapter emphasizes differently; chapter three (short-story) is about characters profiling and writing skills, chapter four (short selections) mainly deals with writing skills and chapter five (novels) targets on how novels reflect time changes and communication effects through adaptation.
