The industry is characterized by having high value added and being technology and knowledge-intensive. After several prominent Taiwanese IT subcontractors entered the field, Taiwan has become one of the world’s main subcontractors as well as an important cooperation partner in the R&D of new products for leading cell phone brands and manufacturers in the world. This study investigates the operation performance of the mobile phone industry in Taiwan.
This study uses Michael E. Porter’s Value Chain and Five Forces Model to understand the business strategies and describes the changes, development and current status of the cell phone industry.
It collects public data of 24 listed companies in the period from the second quarter of 2005 to the first quarter of 2009. The variables of Empirical analysis include the firm’s age, scale, capital and labor ratio , R&D expenses, marketing expenses, debit rate, peak season, etc. Those variables are compared first, and then empirical analysis is used to examine the relationship between them and firm’s performance.
The results of empirical analysis show that scale, R&D expenses, marketing expenses have positive impact on the firm’s operation performance in the mobile phone industry. Thus, in order to increase operation performance, Taiwan’s cell phone firms need to enhance R&D expenses and marketing expenses and to move toward higher value added. Only through expanding into the field of upstream key components, Taiwan’s cell phone firms can become the participants of the standard system in the future.
