The article takes “female • family • locality—analysis of Jiji’s work” as a subject to discuss Jiji who was active in 1960s and currently still continues creations. How does she represent female by her works? By observing the family? By writing about locality?
The article attempts to analyze Jiji’s female unique point of view to represent contemporary female’s suffered difficulties, the situation female struggled for surviving under the patriarchal system, awareness of female consciousness and discuss how female self-awaked, self-respected, self-sustained and then to develop themselves. This could be separately discussed as three aspects of “general difficulty”, “tragic history of going into town” and “the awareness of consciousness.
Secondly, Jiji was born in a big family which has extremely closed family network. Facing incessantly elapsed times, withered elder members of family, the writer who has been 60 years old sighed for those eventful years and worried her memory will be disappeared gradually; therefore, she started to write down history of her family for combing out relationship with family members through the process of transferring images and memories of her mind into words and recorded the happiness or misery, sadness and delight of that generation for combing out her hidden emotion; moreover, she observed local history from family history and brought out “the big times” from “the micro history”. She complemented the angle of view that female looked upon the times and constructed self and family identity from establishing family history.
In addition, “locality represents longitude and latitude of individual’s life map. It is for time, space, individual and politics, which are filled with level and location of human history and memory. Locality is wide and deep; therefore, the article clarifies Jiji’s way of writing about locality, analyzes how her paragraphs recreated locality and landscape to represent her unique individual writing style and to use this feature to fashion the scenery and atmosphere of Hsiluo of Yulin county and Yongding.
We hope to represent the depth and width of Jiji’s concept by this discussion, understand her writing’s connotation and features and recognize evaluation and position of her literature in the contemporary history of Taiwan literature.
