This thesis is to study the dialects of Hezhou, located in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in northeastern China, is one of the important Hakka residence areas. The special geographical location and environment make Hezhou Hakka the most Hakka characteristics of the Hakka people in Guangxi Province. This paper takes actual survey to study the voice system and the voice evolvement phenomenon of Hakka in Zhongshan County, and to understand the historical phonological features and experienced phonological changes of Zhongshan County Hakka dialect. Furthermore, it takes further discussion for its vocabulary.
This paper introduces the system of Zhongshan County Hakka Dialect, focusing on the analysis of sounds, rhyme and tone characteristics, and the similarities and the differences from other Hakka dialects. The paper also lists its homophone characters to have a whole understanding of Zhongshan County Hakka Dialect. This thesis has six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the author’s motivation of this research, aims of the studies, research methods, literature review, and Hezhou Hakka historical and geographical background. Chapter 2 describes the flat surface voice systems of Zhongshan County Hakka through the Zhongshan County Hakka voice corpus. Chapter 3 compares the Zhongshan County Hakka with the medieval phonology. Chapter 4 analyzes the characteristics of consonants, vowels and tones of Zhongshan County of Hakka phonology. Chapter 5 compares the Zhongshan County Hakka with other Hakka dialects, to understand the differences between the vocabulary of Gonghui Town Hakka and Cradle. Chapter 6 concludes the voice system and the characteristics of the Zhongshan County Hakka, and provides conclusions and recommendations in this topic.
