This thesis acquired the photoluminescence spectra, excitation spectra, and time-resolved spectra of trivalent samarium-containing coordination polymers: YxSm2-x(C8H10O4)3 and TbxSm2-x(C8H10O4)3 with 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (C8H10O4, CHDC) as ligands and different compositions of yttrium (Y), samarium (Sm), or terbium (Tb). Previous study indicates there is concentration dependency of the two-stage emission decay curves of the first excited state (4G5/2) in YxSm2-x(CHDC)3, that is not found in the Eu3+-containing coordination polymers. The formation of Sm2O3 was speculated to have contribution to this observation, but this could not fully explain the observed emission behaviors in these compounds. This thesis found that in addition to the formation of Sm2O3, the energy transfer from the CHDC ligands to Sm3+ is also concentration dependent. Moreover, the emission decay curves of the second excited state (4F3/2) in YxSm2-x(CHDC)3 also exhibit the similar concentration dependencey. The comparison between YxSm2-x(C8H10O4)3 and TbxSm2-x(C8H10O4)3 reveals the mechanism and efficiency of the concentration dependent effects in these coordination polymers containing trivalent samarium. |
