Abstract: 摘要: Metamaterials are artificial structures designed for controlling electromagnetic and acoustic waves or fields, they exhibit exceptional properties that are unexpected from their chemical constituents. These properties lead to some fascinating phenomena such as negative refraction, subwavelength imaging, and field enhancement, etc. Novel devices based on these ideas such as superlens, hyperlens, invisibility cloak, and plasmonic waveguide have been fabricated and tested in the past few years. Although these developments are inspiring, some problems are unresolved. For example, most metamaterials are absorptive, which reduce or even destroy their novel characteristics. In addition, results of band structure calculations for metamaterials (most of which are metallic photonic crystals) are incomplete or lacking, thus most understandings to the EM/optical properties of these artificial media are based on the concept of homogenized parameters such as effective permittivity and permeability. In this chapter, we give a simple review on metamaterials research and discuss the problems need to be resolved in the future.
