Facing dynamic rivalry in the contemporary business environment, a firm realizes that its current competitive advantage can be swiftly disrupted and even turns into an obstacle to survival due to organizational inertia. Continuous innovation by actively sensing and responding to changes becomes an imperative for sustainability. Cohen & Levinthal (1990) first addressed the concept of absorptive capability underpinning the innovation capability of a firm. The research followed focused more on the reconceptualization and reification of divergent terms concerning absorptive capability with a lack of attention on empirical development of construct measurement. The concept, therefore, suffers limited application in business research. In addition, previous studies adopting absorptive capability mainly emphasized on exploring its relationship between either organizational antecedents or members’ attributes. Provided that absorptive capability is the ability to acquire, assimilate, transfer and exploit external knowledge, we are surprised to find that organizational learning has not played a role in this stream of research yet. This proposed study intends to construct a model for absorptive capability from organizational learning perspective, aiming to improve the realization of absorptive capability via knowledge creation mechanism. The study will adopt Zahra & George’s definition (2002) by separating the absorptive capability into two different subsets – potential absorptive capability and realized absorptive capability. With integrating Nonaka’s knowledge creation mechanism (1994) – socialization, externalization, combination and internalization, the proposed model attempts to explore how various set of knowledge creation mechanisms enhance potential absorptive capability and another set of knowledge creation mechanisms in turn facilitate the realization ratio of potential absorptive capability. We expect that the coevolutionary approach will shed more on future research and the empirical results can provide effective suggestions to practitioners for realization of absorptive capability.
