Abstract Title of Thesis:A Look at Defectors—focusing on Chinese Communist Aviators defecting to Taiwan Number of pages:236 Term of Graduation:Master’s Thesis for graduation in Second Semester, Academic Year of 94 ROC Graduate Student: Mon-An Nee Advisor:Mao-Chi Chi, Ph.D. Abstract of Thesis: ‘Defectors’ are special products of the cold war era. In Taiwan the term generally refers to those eloped from mainland China, especially those who in a political sense severed ties from the Communist rulers in China. Upon further examination, defectors can be categorized into several groups. Among them the most well know group is those flew their airplanes “seeking freedom”. Such incidents usually drew intense media attention and became international sensations. According to all currently available resources, since the government of ROC relocated to Taiwan in 1949, there were 13 cases of Chinese Communist pilots flew their planes to Taiwan. The intention of this research is to sort through military files, as well as mass media’s report and interviews, to describe the historical facts of these Chinese Communist pilot defectors, and to correct some related misinformation. The thesis contends 6 chapters. Chapter one is the Introduction. The rest of the chapters can be viewed as 2 parts. Part One takes the 13 cases and groups them into 3 separate periods (each a separate chapter) according to the historical characteristics of these cases. In each chapter the historical facts of these defections are presented. This write also attempts preliminary analyses on each defector’s reason for leaving mainland China to ‘seek the free Mother Country’. Part Two provides a further discussion on the title topic. Based on the historical facts presented in the previous chapters, this paper looks deeper into some thought provoking issues and blind spots associated with the defectors. In particular, this writer assembles all government regulations associated with rewarding the ‘defectors’, and discovers many falsehood and doubts in the political propagandas and media tabloids. These are the key points in Chapter 5 and The Conclusion. Being the first paper focusing on the historical facts about these Chinese Communist pilots- ‘defectors’, this paper hopes to achieve some much needed clarifications and corrections on long accustomed political propagandas and popular media reports.
