This study aims at improving our understanding of the concept of Information Technology (IT) skills and exploring the contribution of these skills to IT capabilities and IT-business alignment. IT skills include smart power, soft skills and hard skills. In 2008, Professor Nye has created the term “smart power” that is defined as the ability to use soft power and hard power to get what one wants. But there is still no clear conceptual definition of smart power in academic area. In recent years, soft skills have gained more attention in IS areas. However, research which has empirically documented the link between smart power and soft/hard skills is scant. In this study, IT capabilities focus on areas of capability that related to IS development, such as IT-user collaboration, IT adaptability and IT innovativeness. Moreover, issue about how IT capabilities contribute to IT-business alignment has been discussed not widely in recent years. Therefore, we have interest in how smart power affects soft/hard skills and how these skills affect IT capabilities and IT-business alignment. After analyzing the data, we found that smart power has a negative impact on soft skills-hard skills fit, whereas soft skills-hard skills fit has negative impact on IT-user collaboration and IT adaptability.
