Abstract: 研究期間:10108~10207;This project studies the relationship between the water conservancy construction and rice production in Taoyuan area when grain demand and economic value changed after World War II. Rice was the most significant item to be renewed after the war since it was not only the grain for soldiers and civilians, but also an important income of foreign exchange. Under the shortage of most materials and equipment, the water conservancy was the fastest way to increase agricultural production. In Taoyuan area, Taoyuan Canal had been built up in the Japanese occupied period. Owing to the irrigation breach of Taoyuan Canal, Shihmen Reservoir was built. At the same time, an irrigation system was well-developed for water distribution to farmlands. The farmers were also encouraged to change droughty lands as well as ponds into rice paddies. However, while the construction of the reservoir was finished, the prices of rice and its resulting goods began declining. The farmers thus hesitated about cultivating paddy fields. This raised an argument about the agricultural value of the reservoir. Therefore, this project is going to investigate that, after finishing the reservoir, the grain demand and water conservancy requirements, the farmers’ inclination to cultivating rice paddies, the variations of cultivated lands and rice production, the new relationship between the national reservoir administration and local Irrigation Associations for water allocation, and the effects of these changes on agricultural developments. Through carrying out the project, the canal irrigation investigation for the whole Taoyuan area can be complemented and new research directions for water resources management can be developed. Finally, by means of the analysis on folk’s reservoir applications and rice production, the historical conclusions on the Shihmen Reservoir can be made.
