;Using the existing core books, supplemented by results of previous studies, this paper discusses the pastimes and artistic pursuits of scholars during the Six Dynasties period and, taking this as a point of departure, further discusses family specialties, in-family tutoring, and family character, as well as the skills at which individuals excel. Upon this basis, this paper seeks to outline and offer a clear view of the spiritual origins of these things, and of their significance within that context of those times. The scholars of the Six Dynasties period studied painting, calligraphy, horseback archery, and fencing, and the results of this study show that, externally, these pursuits have something to do with the family culture, political fashions, and competitive vying among scholar groups, while internally, they had something to do with personal self-expectations, inner exploration, the display of personal abilities, and the cultivation of interest.
