Drug recycle means that the most important component of the medication (the API) is recovered by separating it from the less important additives (the excipients). The difficulty in performing such task is most of commercial medications often do not show the exact compositions of the product, and some medicines even did not mention anything at all on its label, except for its main API content. Therefore, we established drug recycle protocols, which was designed so it can be used to recycle any kinds of API with similar properties, regardless of its excipient contents. To test its feasibility, the protocols will be tested to recycle our own pre-formulated drugs with known amount of excipients. If the protocol is proven to be feasible, then it will be used to recycle commercially available drugs to further prove the feasibility of the protocols. The APIs we will use as the drug models are: ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory drug), probucol (a cholesterol-reducing drug), acetaminophen (a common painkiller), tetracycline HCl (a common antibiotic), and arsenic trioxide (an anti-cancer and leukemia drug). The purity of all recovered APIs will be verified by FTIR, PXRD, DSC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and HPLC.
