;The goal of this research proposal is to apply the approaches of social media mining and bibliometrics to understand the trend of virtual reality (VR) from two different angles. From the social media perspective, the VR-related social media data will be retrieved and analyzed to outline the trend of VR by applying an advanced text mining algorithm to disclose the pubic opinions toward VR during the past 10 years. A multi-layer decomposition analysis will be conducted to calculate the strength of conceptual links between key terms and to generate the concept link diagrams. From the bibliometrics analysis, core VR journal papers published in the last decade will be collected for the descriptive analysis and network analysis. The maps of bibliographic coupling network, co-word network, and co-citation network regarding VR research will be illustrated to explore the relationship between the authors and the distribution of research areas. Text mining analysis will be also applied to the abstract of the target journal papers to identify the key topics of VR discussed in the academia. Finally, the similarities and differences between the text mining results of social media and academic database will be summarized to understand the common issues and gaps between the general public and the academia towards VR development. The results of this research project can help companies to identify the potential opportunities of VR applications for consumer market and to bridge the gap between theory and practice in VR research.
