;This project looks at recent academic studies of the far right and cultural texts that take up white supremacism and Nazism as part of their subject matter. Some of the creative language that has been struggled for and developed in social movements since the mid-twentieth century to name white supremacy's role in economic unevenness and the fight against it has been denigrated and made less effective through the appropriative strategies of neoliberal state and corporate interests. By developing historically fleshed out close readings of Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day and Butler's Parable of the Talents, I will explore how cultural texts create the necessary critical languages to address the effective but paradoxical logic of the right, and how they garner representational force that can be mobilized in the political sphere. In this two-year project, I will demonstrate that cultural texts accomplish this by foregrounding sexuality/gender as a synthetic part of the race/nationalist politics of the right in populist and intellectual forms. I read the two texts together as a critical commentary on the tacit, unspeakable links between the far right and mainstream politics.
