;The ideal of ethic group is an important and basic factor that influences the division of Taiwanese Politics from the time of state centralization to political decentralization. To discuss ethic politics, there are two essential questions to ask. First, how ethic group becomes a form of activity? Second, as a form of activity, what is the political form it presents? In the context of ethic politics, scholars who focus on the Hakka identity and consciousness in modern Taiwanese society often trace back to the Hakka activity in 1980s. Either from the concerns to the subjugated position Hakka culture and history rendered into or from the concerns of the Hoklo- Chauvinism, the essential and crucial reason that makes Hakka activity rise is the identity and cultural awakening of the Hakka. This research plan aims to make a three-year exploration about how the Hakka groups in modern Taiwanese society develop diverse forms of cultural narratives to build up the collective consciousness of their members. Also, it will further deal with how the related activists try to practice identity-based social activities and change their political attitude or activity due to those cultural narratives in diverse forms. The approach of this research plan will be narrative and text analysis and in-depth interview. This plan aims to explore the following three issues. First, the cultural narrative formed by the government: on how different departments in the government make and mobilize the discourses about Hakka. Second, the formation of local “Hakka culture”: on how local groups of culture offices and social activist explore and use the ideas of “Hakka imagery,” “Hakka Discourse,” and “Hakka Daily Lives.” Last, the intertwining mixture of Hakka Culture: on how different Hakka groups in Taiwan, including Waishen-Hakka and other Hakka associations, talk about ethic identity themselves and how to reconsider, expand and recreate the idea of “being a Hakka in modern Taiwan.” For short, the central concern of this research is “how the Hakka groups make the possibility of collective activity through the efforts of cultural narratives,” and the goal of this research will be analyzing the cultural engineering process of building Hakka culture and examine its meaning in the context of ethic politics.
