;Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM hereinafter) has played a considerable role in the general discussion of firms’ sustainability strategies. A number of scholars and practitioners have thus put effort to investigate the driving forces of SSCM and measures to enhance its performance. While existing studies have focused on internal and external pressures as the main SSCM drivers, the crucial role of diversity of supply chain alliance system has not gained sufficient attention. In this two-year project, we will conduct a series of research to thoroughly understand the role of diversity in terms of allying networks in the sustainable supply chain practices. In the first-year research, based on the two theories, the Categorization-Elaboration Model and the Information Processing View, an attempt will be made to investigate the mechanism in which the effect of alliance portfolio diversity on sustainability performance will be explained. Then, in the second year, we will apply the Organizational Learning Theory to discuss the interaction of alliance portfolio diversity on other inter-organization sustainability practices, especially the comprehensive decision-making system of the firm and its allying partners. By doing so, the research not only provides effective mechanisms to explain the less investigated topic but also draws a set of guidance into SSCM policies to enhance its sustainable performance.
