;This thesis examines the interplay between representation and futurity in shaping queer existence and movements during the 1990s through an analysis of two distinct cases: Leslie Feinberg’s novel Stone Butch Blues and the Japanese yaoi debates during 1992-1996. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from Amiee Bahng’s conceptualization of futurity and Lee Edelman’s critique of reproductive futurism, the study critiques the linear narratives of queer progress and the subjectification of lived experiences to speculative futures.
The analysis reveals how Stone Butch Blues portrays tensions between radical feminist movements and butch identity, highlighting the marginalization of non-conforming queer expressions within feminist discourses. Similarly, the yaoi debates expose the conflicts between female fantasies of male-male romance and the realities of gay men’s struggles for visibility and rights in Japan. Both texts reflect the pressures of neoliberalism and global queer normativity, which constrain diverse expressions of queerness into narrow frameworks of inclusion and respectability. When approached by contemporary readers, both texts become embodiments of a neoliberal reflexivity, which not only advocate a settled future within their narratives, but also serve as historical evidences that validate the justice of the neoliberal futurity.
The thesis ultimately advocates for a reimagining of queer solidarity that transcends singular, homogenized readings. By revisiting the multiplicity of past queer struggles, it seeks to uncover alternative modes of resistance and solidarity that honor the complexities of queer existence.
