Abstract:	本計畫研究對象為學界熟知概念「西學」，然其起於何處、起始之生態如何、發展之漸況又如何？況且「西學」概念運用的語境非止專門研究，開放性內涵令其使用如一個習慣語。本計畫為解決上述提問確定目的與方針：從西人所辦現代印刷中文刊物說起、從傳教刊物由南洋到口岸、從《遐邇貫珍》、《六合叢談》等報刊文章、文化容涵之「西方格致、西國人文、西人信仰」的知識結構著手，完成1850-1880的「西學『漸』程」，以解答上述問題。從現代起點通過「西學知識建構」、「（西）學案」的實證研究，給西學以較堅實的內涵與交流平臺基礎，自然會影響後來者態度與方法之謹嚴，提升西學研究交流之效。
