;The Pacific Poetry Festival, held for fifteen editions from 2006 to 2022, is the focus of this research, which aims to explore its developmental history, performance and event spaces, and the characteristics of related poetic texts. As Taiwan′s second longest-running poetry festival, the Pacific Poetry Festival not only showcases Hualien′s unique local cultural features but has also become an important platform connecting the local and the international.
In terms of historical development, the Pacific Poetry Festival has deep poetic connections with Mount Meilun, from the "Hydrangea Poetry Society" during the Japanese colonial period to modern poetry activities, demonstrating cultural inheritance and innovation.
As the hosting venue, Pine Garden not only embodies the transformation from a Japanese military command center to a cultural space, but its unique play of light and shadow, sounds, and spatial atmosphere create a harmonious resonance with the fluid qualities of poetry. Regarding spatial utilization, this research analyzes how the poetry festival makes good use of its indoor and outdoor venues for different types of performances. From "Poetry Under the Trees" on the outdoor lawn beneath the pine trees to "Poetry Roundtables" in indoor exhibition spaces, the interweaving of space and poetry creates a unique cultural experience. Particularly noteworthy is the "Poets′ Night" event, which has developed the distinctive feature of combining poetry with beer, showcasing the integration of Hualien′s local culture.
In analyzing related poetic texts, this thesis traces the thematic evolution of the Pacific Poetry Festival through three stages: from an initial focus on the local environment, to expanding international perspectives in the middle period, and then incorporating contemporary elements in recent years. During the poetry roundtables and poet discussion activities, the exchange of works between local and international poets not only presents the cultural diversity of the poetry festival but also reflects attention to contemporary social issues.
This research also identifies challenges facing the Pacific Poetry Festival, including practical problems such as venue maintenance, succession of curators, and funding acquisition, as well as how to innovate while maintaining core values. Future development directions could include deeper connections with education, improving digital platforms, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
