;Examining how the practice of coming out has been constructed based on progressive stances of LGBTQ-advocacy movements and how it has been popularized in the local context of Vietnam, this thesis will not only study the historical emergence of the practice of coming out in Vietnam but also complicating it by looking into the power relation in the confessional paradigm of coming out and its adaptation with Vietnamese socio-cultural traits. This study will also consider how to challenge the form of power in the confessional structure of coming out through different perspectives—via cultural representation of queer in the contemporary Vietnamese context. By looking at the selected texts of cultural representation, the thesis attempts to rethink the necessity of coming-out practice as a liberating means when the practice of coming out paradigm might entangle with the dilemmas in different cultural contexts, especially in such an Asian country as Vietnam where cultural values appreciated in parent-child bonding—coming-out becomes essential for not only claiming identity as individualism but also retaining that familial connection.
